What if you woke up tomorrow morning and found that your farm had been shut down by the Secretary of the Interior?

That’s exactly what happened to the Lunny family on November 30, 2012.  Secretary Salazar decided not to renew the farm’s permit, and has scheduled shut down of all operations in the next 90 days.

This follows an 8 year battle, during which the National Park Service was found to have misused and made up data in order to make a case for not renewing Drake’s Bay Oyster Company’s permit.  Those opposing the oyster farm said that it had to be removed in order to protect wilderness, even though the Park Service’s own regulations would permit the continued operation of the oyster farm as part of managed wilderness.  It came down to a decision by the Secretary of the Interior, Ken Salazar.

As I look at this picture of the Lunnys, I imagine what it would be like to know that, even though I’ve been lauded as a steward of natural resources, my right to farm is being taken from me.  The Lunny’s raise grass fed beef on land leased from Point Reyes National Seashore, as do many other farmers, and this decision makes them all wonder if they will be next.  Please help us prevent the closure of this family farm, and let everyone know how important farming is to this country by signing the petition to the White House to overturn Secretary Salazar’s decision.

I have tried to join the petition and register with the White House site twice–They have not sent back an E-Mail verification, or a temporary password either time. I cannot enter my signature to the Petition–What am I doing wrong? I really want to help weigh in on this–Many thanks, Clark McPhers
